KO - as a "cheating" option you can scan pieces on clear decal paper and print them on a laser/inkjet printer. the trick is finding good photos to work with. after that you're set.
it gets you a great amount of detail. and especially since i'm about N scale it's hard for me to draw anything real detailed on my freights. if i want those fine silver philly hands on my tankers i'd need to print them...
model railroader ran an article on it awhile ago featuring an old BN caboose with a big DIAR straight.. it was cool.

ive seen some outstanding work with decals. as dub pointed out the shot has to be a perfect - straight on shot. I have not used decals for graffiti, yet..but im looking forward to trying it. As for N scale, hats off to you. the guy at my LHS has a pretty slick little N scale layout in the store, and i saw a huge one at a show about 2 years ago. some of the cars even had pieces and a working FRED. i thought it was pretty amazing...cant find the fliks tho :-( here is an N car i did about 3 years ago for a friend. i couldnt get more detailed than this and this is nothing to write home about...

When I get time I'll crack open my storage cases. I have a decent stock going.. it's all in storage at my parents house though.
I have a fair amount of graff on some cars, some looks good, most not. It's also fun as hell to grill the backs of buildings.
