ok, so im really bored. it would be cool to know what YOUR dream, or future plans for a layout will consist of. Here is mine:
scale: HO Era: 1990-2000 size: 25x45 (its a fantisy, ok) benchwork: wood & foam track code: 100 power/control: DCC
ideally, my layour will consist of two towns, named after my grandparents who introduced me to trains. Kateville & Poppitown (my grandfather's nickname was Poppi). One town will be populated with considerable residence and a downtown area some industry, while the second will be more focused on industry. seperating them will be a 6-7 lane yard owned by GTPX industries (Grandma Train & Poppi...yall know what the X means). this short line of sorts will be a feeder company for NS. industries will include: farmers market (lots of reefers), paper recycling/or printing company (boxcars), corn syrup refinery (hoppers, airslides, tanks) and cement (open top hoppers, short covered hoppers). all the industries will be loosely based on industry storage & loading facilities i have had the pleaseure of getting really familiar with throughout the 1990s if you get my drift. if possible, as a final touch i will add some sort of elevated rapid rail system that services the two towns. if all goes well, in the next 5 years, i will be moving to a bigger house and this layout will exist in two seperate rooms with a mainline throgh the wall.
so in the meantime i am pretty much just gathering cars. custom weathering, reading and just getting ready for the time when i can create my own world where the yards are always full and the trains are always running.

Awesome idea! Dreaming about future scale projects is all I do too. It's what gets me by at the grocery store line or while standing in line at the USPS.
Let me think about this and compile a complete and comprehensible Dream Layout Scenario reply to this.

this is an awesome thread idea.
i'm actually split between making modules or building a big layout. making modules (to Ntrak standards) would allow me to switch it up as much as i want. that would be awesome.
then again, i like operations too. if i built a layout, i would want to do something with NS circa 1991-2006 that allows me to run all kinds of traffic, probably based off Brunswick, MD - the best railfan town there is in my opinion. Cumberland MD would work too, as would Baltimore for... uh... "arts and crafts" reasons.
I also want to model the Tropicana train, ideally. But that would be for fun.

unfortunately, modern tropis are not out yet. but 1996, you could get away with the older orange baby ridg joints. i saw a layout somewhere (maybe youtube) with a whole yard full of them. i have heard roumors about the modern ones coming out real soon - but been seeing that rumor floating around for about a year. Again, KO is a true craftsman. after seeing that refer kitbash with the cigarette lighter he did in another thread, i believe he could create a modern tropi easily.

It's what gets me by at the grocery store line or while standing in line at the USPS. i do the same thing - especially in line at the grocery store.

yeah, seriously, I do this at work too. unfortunately, modern tropis are not out yet. but 1996, you could get away with the older orange baby ridg joints. i saw a layout somewhere (maybe youtube) with a whole yard full of them. i have heard roumors about the modern ones coming out real soon - but been seeing that rumor floating around for about a year. Again, KO is a true craftsman. after seeing that refer kitbash with the cigarette lighter he did in another thread, i believe he could create a modern tropi easily. I heard about this too and I appreciate the confidence. I've been looking at this style reefer car www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1730215 www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=89259This is totally scratch build / kitmash-able. The part that I saw as challenging would be getting the refrigeration unit and railing and fuel tank area and details accurate since it will be fully visible.

what about modifying (bashing) a 90' auto parts carrier like this one. just from splicing fliks together for years i think it could be done relatively easy. but like you said, the frig unit and catwalk at the end would be the real challenge. although the cigarette lighter deal might work. i have a few of these laying around, just shells. then how would you go about making the chassis also. hummmm - easy to get carried away.

oh hell yeah. Like cut out one door width of material all around. Sort of slicing salami. Then glue back together the remaining two halves.
I was thinking about making a mold of one of the doors of a 50' mech reefer that I already have here, because of the similar details, then casting it twice for each side. The rest would be scratch built with plastic materials so I can make it as accurate as my skill level will allow. The roof style, end style, the whole bottom skirt shape detail. The chassis bed would be a simple flat and rib assembly and just use trucks I already have.
... easier written than done...

I thought about the dream layout/module a little more.
I'm thinking N or HO scale running through various other scale model environments. Into larger scale building windows and out the door of another, through larger scale truck cabs or military tank hulls or ship hulls. Sort of a sci-fi and historical military battles scenarios etc.

sounds dope. my favorite movies are sci fi and military. creating the scenes would be great.

. . . although the cigarette lighter deal might work. i have a few of these laying around, just shells. . . The disposable lighter method works great for the 50' R-70-20 Mech reefers because they are sort of hidden inside and in HO scale the implied look is enough, IMO. I did get a set of (2) 53' Utility Reefer Trailers on sale at my LHS this weekend and they have the detailed, Carrier Transicold units included (picture here maybe tomorrow). I plan to make molds of these that can be cast for rolling stock reefer projects
